Madrid is famous for its numerous sidewalk cafés and café-bars. Madrilenos often walk along the avenues in the evenings during summer. That is when the city’s fountains are illuminated. This activity has declined because many boulevards have become more crowded with automobiles.
There are several large parks in the city. The most famous is Retiro Park. It is much like New York City’s Central Park. It has three-lined avenues, an art exhibition pavilion, an artificially created lake, monuments, fountains and a rose garden. The second large park is Casa de Campo. It has a cable railway, monorail, and a modern zoo. Another park is the Parque del Oeste. It has a broad area of trees, rose gardens and avenues between the city and the Manzanares River. It was the third day. Tim had cut all over his hands and blood flowed his legs where the leeches had bitten him. He felt he could not walk another step.
Three weeks ago, he and his partner Raman had decided to join a competition to look for a million-dollar diamond hidden in the jungle. That was the prize. Fifteen pairs of contestants, chosen from all over the country, had taken a one-hour journey in a helicopter. They had been dropped off in the middle of the jungle. Holding precious clues and a map, they started their journey.
Initially, everyone was full of energy. But at night, there was a heavy thunderstorm. A few tents were lost and everyone got wet. Then a few fell ill. The next day, some terrified contestants went home.
On the second day, things got difficult. They walked uphill on slippery muddy ground. At some places they had to cut through fallen trees. At night they were kept awake by a loud crying animal. Tim guessed that it must have been injured. More people decided to go home the next day.
Only five pairs were left. “I didn’t think it would be so difficult,” complained Tim.
“Come on, Tim, we can do this!” replied Raman. “We have spent time in the jungle before and we know what to do to survive.”

Dear Ziena
I’ve got bad news. I will not be able to come over to your house this Sunday night because I am being punished. What is even worse is that mother has taken away my mobile phone. That’s why you did not receive any SMS or phone call from me. I feel very sad. It all happened because of something I did yesterday.
Yesterday evening my elder sister, Sofia, wanted to go for a party in town with her friend, Erna. I found out about it and begged her to take me along. At first she said no. Then I told her that I would tell our parents about it. She gave in.
My parents would not let us go as our exams are around the corner, so we lied to them. Sofia told them that we would have dinner with Erna, then go to her house to study. They agreed.
However, when we did not return by 10 p.m. they got worried and called Erna’s house. No one was there.
By the time Erna’s parents dropped us home, it was about one o’clock in the morning! There had been a bad jam in town and our car had a flat tire as well. Erna’s parents were socked to learn about our lie.
I feel guilty for making them worry about us. Father really yelled at us. I am relieved that father still lets me use the internet at home.
Please write to me. It feels like it is going to be a very long weekend for me and Sofia.
Take care,
Sarah
